State DEP approves clean up plan for Charleston site

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Department of Environmental Protection announced Tuesday it has approved a remediation cleanup plan to improve conditions at the former Speedway gas station on Charleston’s West Side.

The site is located at the intersection of Lee Street West and Pennsylvania Avenue and is approximately 0.29 acres.

The gas station was removed after a lead was detected on the property in 1992, according to a news release. Underground storage tanks that were removed were replaced and later removed in 2006.

The voluntary remediation plan will include a “land use covenant” that will ban the use of site groundwater for any purpose other than environmental monitoring, limit the properties use to commercials and industrial purposes only and orders the use of vapor mitigation equipment for buildings that have a basement.

A report will be submitted to the DEP’s Office of Environmental Remediation for review and approval following the cleanup.
