Taking stock of the Mountaineers’ loss to K-State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — During the 26 days between now and West Virginia’s next football game, you can bet on  The Lunch playing the Snow Miser song a few hundred times and replaying even more frequently the unlikely scenario that led to a loss at Kansas State.

“We were the better team—there’s no sugar-coating that,” said West Virginia running backs coach JaJuan Seider. “I don’t care what anyone says, that’s my feeling on that. We should have won this game.”

Few could disagree. Even a noticeable segment of K-State’s 27th consecutive sellout crowd bolted at halftime, when the Wildcats trailed 13-3 and looked wholly incompetent on offense. Then Kody Cook happened. And Morgan Burns happened twice.

After to sliding to 0-4 vs. K-State, Dana Holgorsen offered authentic admiration in suggesting this was simply the way Bill Snyder’s overachieving program gets things done. More than a few Mountaineers fans are wondering aloud whether their program will achieve similar distinction under Holgorsen.

The “Taking Stock” feature—a Monday staple of The Gold & Blue Lunch Report—reviewed the tape, formed a few conclusions and began searching for flights toward the Cactus Bowl, where WVU draws another opponent that blew a lead in its season finale.
