CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The temperatures for November were above average and the trend continues into the month of December with no real expectation of winter in sight.
“Our normal temperature this time of year for Charleston is 47 degrees and from our forecast we’ll be 10 to 20 degrees higher than that,” said Meteorologist Michael Charnick. “Some places could take a run at 70 for a high by Sunday.”
Charnick said Sunday’s highs and possibly Saturday’s temperatures could threaten records, some of which were set in the 1930’s. He attributed the higher than normal temperatures to a warm front currently passing through West Virginia which is bringing a more southerly flow of air into the state. Although a cold front is expected to push through Sunday night and Monday, the temperatures are expected to stay relatively warm.
“Behind that front, temperatures are still going to be above average even though the cold front is still coming through,” he said. “Looks like the higher than normal temps will last for at least the next couple of weeks.”
Record highs are in the mid-to upper 70’s, but those will be threatened.
“Right now we’re forecasting on Sunday a high of 75 in Charleston and 74 in Huntington,” said Charnick. “We’ll be within a degree or two (of the record).”
