Bar fire not considered suspicious; SC mayor praises response

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County bar was destroyed in a Thursday morning fire, authorities said.

Dispatchers were called at just before 10 a.m. reporting flames and heavy smoke at Mojo’s near U.S. Route 60 and the Mound in South Charleston.

Flames were shooting several feet into the air and the heavy smoke could be seen from Interstate 64.

South Charleston firefighters used a ladder truck to fight the blaze. Charleston and Dunbar firefighters were also on the scene. There were no injuries.

After an investigation by the State Fire Marshal, the blaze was not considered to be suspicious.

Mayor Frank Mullens commended the effort of the city at Thursday night’s city council meeting.

“The response was outstanding. Our fire department is just great; they did a wonderful job,” Mullens said. “The community did a wonderful job. Our police and our public works department were all there helping out; the sanitary board was helping out.”

He said businesses stepped up to provide for emergency workers.

“We had private businesses donate food. We as a city set up a food station for our staff and our first responders; we knew it was going to be a long day for them,” the mayor said. “It really was a complete team effort for our community.”

Mojo’s recently went under new management, reports said.

It is believed the fire started in the rear of the building, near the roof, but an exact cause remains unknown.
