Black ice causes multiple wrecks in Kanawha, Jackson counties

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Freezing rain and black ice caused several traffic accidents Friday morning in the Kanawha Valley.

One of those accidents involved a Charleston fire truck that crashed into a guardrail on Sugar Creek Road responding to another wreck. Police said the driver hit black ice and ended up in the creek.

No one in the car was hurt. Two firefighters were injured and rushed to the hospital.

Another crash happened on Childress Road in Alum Creek when a pick up truck overturned after another driver slid down the hill when the road became slippery. Police said the woman suffered minor injuries from her seat belt.

Also, the icy conditions resulted in the closure of Route 2 in Jackson County. The road in Ravenswood was shutdown after several drivers crashed into the ditch due to the slick surface.

Wrecks on Falcon Drive and Kelley’s Creek Road were also reported.
