SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. — A clipper system made driving a challenge in parts of West Virginia Tuesday, forcing several school systems to close early.
The heavy snow squalls began first in the northern panhandle Tuesday morning before invading counties along the U.S. Route 50 corridor and then moving through the Greenbrier Valley to the Beckley area. Some southern coalfield communities also saw some heavier bands of snow.
About a dozen county school systems closed early Tuesday.
Authorities closed a section of Interstate 70 near Wheeling for a period of time Tuesday afternoon following several traffic accidents. Motorists were struggling to make it around Morgantown because of the heavy snow. It was difficult for motorists to distinguish lanes of traffic on sections of Interstate 79.
