Byrd Center at Shepherd renamed, refocused

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — There’s something new on the campus of Shepherd University.

The Congressional Education Foundation, Inc., which operates the newly renamed Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Study announced a new logo and name change Thursday.

The center has been renamed the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education.
The changes reflect the center’s mission, center director Ray Smock said.

“We are following Senator Byrd’s great interest and passion, understanding congress in its fullest constitutional context,” Smock said.

Even with approval of Congress at historic lows, the mission remains vital, according to Smock.

“It’s too important an institution to ignore,” Smock said. “It’s our job to study it in a non-partisan way and to keep the story of this branch of government before the public.”

The center will launch a series of events relating to Byrd’s legacy later this year, including a traveling tour across the state that will end in Nov. 2017, the late senator’s centennial.
