McDowell County woman struck and killed by train Thursday evening

WELCH, W.Va. — A McDowell County woman was killed Thursday evening after being struck by a train that was heading to Bluefield.

Melissa Trent, 32, of Welch died after she was walking on the Norfolk and Southern Railroad tracks, and a freight train loaded with coal struck her as she walked through the Hemphill No. 2 Tunnel, police said.

Trent was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing.
