Crews scrambling amid water main break in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Crews with West Virginia American Water Company have a mess on their hands this morning in downtown Charleston.  A 12 inch main water in the downtown broke about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The pipe burst on Laidley Street and sent water cascading across a number of nearby streets.  The water almost immediately froze with temperatures hovering in the upper teens.  Now many of the nearby streets and sidewalks are coated in ice in the area of the Transit Mall in downtown Charleston.

Laidley Street is closed and KURT buses are picking up riders along Summers Street as repairs are made.

West Virginia American officials are still assessing the damage.  Water service in the area of the Transit Mall is shut off for the time being as repairs are made.  Officials have no word on when the repairs will be completed.
