Girls basketball: Summers County’s Ryan looking for more intensity

HINTON, W.Va. — The Summers County girls basketball team entered this week with a 13-0 record and No. 5 Class AA ranking in the most recent MetroNews Power Index, prior to falling Thursday night to Bluefield 82-71.

“We don’t have the depth that we would like to have, but we’ve been really pleased with our starting lineup,” head coach Wayne Ryan said during a recent appearance on the MetroNews High School Sportsline. “Every kid in our starting lineup is averaging double figures and has been pretty consistent for us offensively. We would really like to improve defensively, we just don’t think we have the right mentality and intensity level that it takes.”

The Lady Bobcats are positioned in a very difficult section, along with still undefeated Wyoming East.

“If you’ve seen Wyoming East, they have two teams that could win the state championship – the one that starts and the one that comes off of the bench,” Ryan said. “They’re that deep and that talented, that’s a great situation to be in, but a tough one to prepare for. They’ll be hard for anybody to beat.”

Summers County and Wyoming East had their first regular season meeting postponed. The Bobcats, meanwhile, looking to get back to the state tournament after such a storied history that includes five straight Class AA titles from 2007 to 2011.

“I’ve got great kids, they are tremendous people,” Ryan said. “They play hard in their own way. But they do not play as hard as the legacy in our program wants them to play, or the tradition of our program requires them to play. They haven’t learned that level of intensity yet. If we can become a better defensive team, we can play with and beat anybody.”

The complete interview with Coach Ryan is posted at the top of the page.
