WHEELING, W.Va. — Those part of a standing room only crowd Friday night at Wheeling Park High School didn’t leave the town hall meeting with the Ohio County Board of Education satisfied.
The meeting was called by the board to discuss the open superintendent’s job. The board decided in December not to renew the contract of school superintendent Dr. Diana Vargo. It was looking for input from those in attendance on what they would like to see in the next superintendent. Instead board members mostly heard from Vargo supporters.
The board announced at the beginning of the meeting that it would not be taking questions, only comments causing those in the crowd to boo. They booed again when three of the four board members in attendance left the room quickly when the meeting was ended following an hour of comments.
The meeting was a disappointment, BOE President Shane Mallet told reporters afterward.
“All we had were the same individuals who have been coming to the board meetings to disrupt that process,” Mallet told WTOV-TV.
There has been a 16 percent slide in the county’s math scores, Mallet said.
“That’s not acceptable here in Ohio County,” he said.
Feb. 4 is the deadline for applications with a decision expected by the end of the month.
