Wheeling police officer pleads no contest to lesser charge

WHEELING, W.Va. — A Wheeling police officer will return to work soon after pleading no contest to a domestic battery charge Monday in Ohio County Magistrate Court.

William Ward allegedly pointed a gun at his girlfriend in front of her children during an argument about an ex-boyfriend. It happened at his home in Wheeling Island last March. He was originally charged with brandishing but pleaded no contest to the lesser charge Monday.

The case will be dismissed if Ward follows all rules of probation for the next two years, authorities said.

Ward will serve a three-month suspension without pay and then he’ll be on light duty during the term of his probation and receive partial pay.

The magistrate ordered he have no contact with the victim in the case.
