PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Wheeling on Monday was unanimously approved by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission board of directors to host the high school football state championship games for four more years through 2019.
Wheeling, Charleston and Huntington were all invited to submit bids, but Wheeling was the only potential host to submit a bid.
Wheeling Island Stadium has hosted the Super Six since 1994. Wheeling has beat out competing bids over those years from Charleston, Huntington and Parkersburg.
The Super Six is set for the first weekend in December each year, with the Class AA championship played on Friday night, the Class AAA title game on Saturday afternoon and the Class A title game on Saturday night.
This past year out of Class AAA, Wheeling Park won its first football championship on its home field in one of the largest Super Six championship crowds.
