WHEELING, W.Va.– Wheeling Police were investigating claims of a vehicle hit by gunfire Wednesday morning. However, police are unsure if it was a gunshot or another object which damaged a Mountaineer Gas Company vehicle.
“Something struck the truck, but we’re not ready to say it was a bullet,” said Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Martin Kimball.
The gas company employee driving the vehicle told police she thought a shot was fired at her. Whatever hit the truck, struck the metal about an inch from the rear window and shattered the back glass.
“There are two dents about two inches apart and about an inch from the glass,” Kimball said. “But they look different.”
The incident happened about 8 a.m. on State Route 2 near Ohio Valley Hospital. The hospital was placed on lock down as a precaution after the incident.
Wheeling Police canvassed a wooded hillside above the scene in search of clues, but could find nothing to indicate a shooter or anything else had come from the hillside above.
The driver was not injured, but was shaken up by the incident according to police.
