MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Some 58 years lapsed since West Virginia defeated top-15 teams in consecutive games, but don’t bother looking to see the last time the Mountaineers knocked off three in a row.
That hasn’t happened.
But there’s an opportunity Tuesday night in Lawrence to pull off the hat trick and perhaps bury the Jayhawks in their quest for a 12th straight Big 12 title. (A two-game deficit with seven games—including a trip to Norman—remaining could be too much to make up.)
West Virginia is surfacing on Final Four darkhorse lists across the media landscape, though a top-10 RPI and a lead on the No. 1 RPI conference might make them not so dark-horsey.
“I feel like a lot of people are reminiscing to the 2010 Final Four team,” said point guard Jevon Carter. “I feel like they think that we can do the same thing or maybe even more.”
The Gold & Blue Lunch embraces reminiscing, nostalgia and pining in general. Who knows, maybe this iteration of WVU can go further than the 1958 and 2010 teams did.
