ONA, W.Va. — Cabell Midland in recent history has consistently put together senior football classes a good mix of college athletes. But this year’s class, specifically, could eventually have 11 kids signed to play at the next level.
On signing day last week, the Knights had three players officially go D-I in Reese Donahue with West Virginia (who is already enrolled at WVU and in Morgantown), Caperton Humphrey with Eastern Kentucky and Jacob Hendricks with Army.
“It’s always exciting to see our kids with goals of wanting to play college football and to have that come true,” Salmons said. “We had a good senior class. The last five years, we’ve had an average of seven to eight kids going on to play (in college). This year was special – we had a good group and that’s one of my main goals as a coach is to help your kids and promote them.”
Other players who signed last week from Cabell Midland included Lucas Jacobs who will be a preferred walk-on at Kansas, Sammy Perry who signed with Charleston and QB Tyler Brown who signed with West Virginia State. Salmons said five other Cabell Midland players have multiple offers and hadn’t decided.
“If kids can go on and further their education and play football (it’s an accomplishment),” Salmons said. “I always tell our kids that Cabell Midland is just a stepping stone – we don’t want it to be the best thing that they’ve done. If it is, then that’s great too. But we want them to take what we’ve learned from us in our program and go on to be prepared for college.”
