State retirees hope to make impact with lawmakers Thursday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Retired state workers are hoping efforts planned for Thursday at the state capitol will help convince lawmakers that they are in need.

The Coalition of Retired Public Employees (CORPE) will hold its annual legislative breakfast in the Capitol Cafeteria. It’s a chance to meet one-on-one with lawmakers, CORPE President Ernie “Spud” Terry said.

“Each of our folks can look directly into the eyes of those who maybe have legislation that would hurt us,” Terry said.

Retirees are concerned about increased costs in PEIA and the continued lack of a cost of living increase.

“It’s (PEIA increases) thousands of dollars potentially for our retirees and that’s desperation time for a lot of our retirees, given the fact we’ve never had a COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) and our pension (buying power) is shrinking,” Terry said.

Organizers are hoping for a large turnout, Terry said.

“When  you are talking to somebody they can look in your eyes and see your hurt and maybe even see some frustration and anger. We hope we can keep this positive and get some help for a very needy group of people,” Terry said.

CORPE has been gaining some traction in recent years with a proposed $20,000 income tax exemption.

Thursday’s breakfast begins at 9:00 in the Capitol Cafeteria. CORPE provides free parking near the state capitol with free shuttle service.
