West Virginia Scholar Program opens; Full Wesleyan scholarship on the line

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Applications are now being accepted for the 2016 MetroNews West Virginia Scholar Program.

The grand prize winner, who will be announced in June, will receive a full, four-year scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan that’s valued at $125,000.

“It’s always a great time of our year to be able to announce this important program,” said John Waltz, vice president for enrollment management at West Virginia Wesleyan.

“(It’s) One of the great partnerships we have and we really look forward to this.”

The annual scholarship program is open to current high school juniors in the Mountain State.

“Everyone that wins always offers, one of the first things, that, ‘I didn’t I’d be able to get this,’ or ‘Someone encouraged me to do this and I wasn’t even sure I even wanted to try,'” Waltz noted on Wednesday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

The grand prize includes tuition, fees, room and board at the Buckhannon school.

Second prize is a four-year, $5,000 scholarship, while third prize is a four-year, $2,500 scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan. All of the awards begin with the 2017 fall semester.

Applications must be submitted online here by Apr. 10, 2016.

In addition to MetroNews and West Virginian Wesleyan, the sponsors for this year’s West Virginia Scholar Program include the West Virginia Hospital Association, the Home Builders Association of West Virginia, ZMM Architects and Engineers, the High Technology Foundation, Friends of Coal and the West Virginia Forestry Association.
