MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Quincy Wilson announced Tuesday he left his post as West Virginia assistant director of football operations to become running backs coach at Division II Glenville State.
“I’ve known him for years, and obviously, he’s a face and name that everybody knows,” said Glenville State head coach David Hutchison. “I knew he was getting the itch to get his on-the-field coaching career started. He’ll come in and do a great job with our guys here now, and he’s already reaching out to different coaches and prospects on the recruiting side.”
For the past four years, Wilson counseled West Virginia football players on academics, university resources and agents, assisted with community relations and organized facets of preseason training camp—what he described as “learning the organization side of what it takes to run a program.”
All along he felt the pull to become more involved through coaching.
“It’s been on my mind the last couple years,” Wilson said Tuesday, minutes after wrapping up his second staff meeting of the day in Glenville. “I’ve been going to conventions, meeting people, doing the clinics and trying to get experience that way. Now Coach Hutch is giving me the opportunity to get the experience that I need.”
At Glenville State, where Hutchison has been with the Pioneers for eight seasons, including the last five as head coach, spring practice begins in two weeks. Wilson said he’s diving into learning GSU’s variation of the Pistol offense and evaluating returning players.
“Quincy’s energetic and motivated and he’s going to come in and do things the right way,” Hutchison said.
The Weirton, W.Va., native rushed for 47 touchdowns as a senior at Weir High before becoming a standout for the Mountaineers from 1999 to 2003. Wilson piled up 2,608 rushing yards to rank eighth on WVU’s career list including 1,380 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final season to earn third-team AP All-American honors.
Glenville State had another former West Virginia player on staff last season when Ryan Nehlen coached receivers. Nehlen recently joined Marshall as an offensive graduate assistant.
