Myers jolted as Hawaii takes series lead

HONOLULU – BJ Myers suffered his first loss of the season and West Virginia stranded 10 runners in a 6-2 loss at Hawaii late Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Kyle Davis had three hits, including his third home run of the season, but the Mountaineers (6-3) didn’t recover from falling behind 4-0 in the first three innings.

Hawaii’s Eric Ramirez homered off BJ Myers as the Rainbow Warriors downed WVU 6-2 late Saturday.

The Rainbow Warriors (6-6) tallied six runs on seven hits with one error. WVU left 10 runners on base, and UH stranded five.

“The character of our team is being tested right now,” West Virginia coach Randy Mazey said. “We were feeling really good coming here for this series, but we haven’t played well out here.”

Myers (2-1) gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits over six innings. He allowed a two-run, two-out shot by first baseman Eric Ramirez in the fourth inning.

Hawaii’s Alex Hatch (11-1) fanned seven and didn’t walk a batter over 6 2/3 innings, forcing the Mountaineers to win Sunday in order to salvage a four-game split.

West Virginia stranded two runners in the eight and ninth innings.

“(Sunday) will be a statement on the character of the team,” Mazey said. “That game will tell a lot about how the rest of the season is going to go.”
