Wrong way, head-on crash on I-77 Monday morning kills four

RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. — A head-on crash that killed four people in an Ohio family of eight shut down a section of 1-77 northbound early Monday morning.

State Police say shortly after 1:30 a.m., the family was traveling back from a trip north on the West Virginia Turnpike near the Ghent exit when their Ford Explorer SUV was hit head on by a Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck traveling south in the northbound lane.

The driver of the Ford Explorer and three of its passengers, two of which were juveniles, died at the scene. Four other passengers and the driver of the pickup truck remain at an area hospital.

The names of those involved have not been released. Alcohol is suspected to have played a role, and charges could be filed, according to State Police.
