Ex-Houston standout Carrier will coach WVU receivers

New West Virginia receivers coach Tyron Carrier caught 320 passes in his University of Houston career and spent two years in the CFL before becoming a Baylor grad assistant during 20i5.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia filled its receivers coach vacancy Wednesday by hiring 28-year-old Tyron Carrier, a record-setting pass-catcher at Houston who’ll be entering his first full-time coaching job.

Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen, who was Carrier’s offensive coordinator for two seasons at Houston, had been overseeing the WVU receivers himself since Lonnie Galloway left to become offensive co-coordinator at Louisville in March.

“We would like to welcome Tyron to the West Virginia football program,” Holgorsen said. “He was an outstanding receiver and returner when I coached him at Houston so he brings an excellent understanding of our offensive system. He also brings a good knowledge of the Big 12 Conference.”

Carrier spent 2015 as an offensive graduate assistant at Baylor, where he worked with one of the nation’s most explosive receiving units, highlighted by Biletnikoff Award winner Corey Coleman.

In a school release, Carrier said “it feels like I am home, being with Coach Holgorsen again. He did a lot for me as a player.”

Carrier was a super-productive component in Houston’s spread attack, catching 320 passes for 3,493 yards and 22 touchdowns over four seasons. Along with recording the second-most career receptions in NCAA history, Carrier matched the FBS career record with seven kick-return touchdowns.

He played his freshman and sophomore seasons under Holgorsen, making 80 catches for 1,026 yards in 2008 and grabbing 91 receptions for 1,029 yards in 2009.

Carrier becomes the youngest of three new West Virginia assistants, joining cornerbacks coach Blue Adams, 36, and safeties coach Matt Caponi, 33.
