3 fraternity chapters at WVU suspended in one week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Three West Virginia University fraternities have been suspended within the same week, the school announced.

Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu and Delta Tau Delta allegedly ran afoul of policies imposed by their national offices or the university.

“The bar has been raised of what we expect out of our students at WVU,” said Dean of Students Corey Farris. “By raising the bar, that also means holding students accountable when their actions are not consistent with the values and goals of the university.”

Sigma Chi has been reprimanded by its national office after the fraternity reportedly held a weekend activity that “violated many regulations of both the fraternity and the University.” Sigma Chi’s suspension was indefinite pending further investigation.

Suspensions also were handed down by the WVU Office of Student Conduct for the recently mentioned social event and an April 2 party. Sigma Chi members are reportedly expected to address the concerns with national headquarters within a week.

Sigma Nu members are under a social activity suspension for the rest of the spring semester. The local chapter allegedly planned an event that “included violations of the Fraternity’s risk management policies and procedures.”

Earlier this week, the WVU colony of Delta Tau Delta national fraternity was indefinitely suspended by its national office and the university Interfraternity Council. A member’s TV audition video reportedly included “inappropriate comments toward women, describing social functions that violate the conduct code of the IFC, and referencing activities that violated and are contradicting to the values of the national fraternity.”
