Dad expects Will Grier to be ‘eligible the first week of 2017’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Chad Grier, whose quarterback son Will is West Virginia-bound after two seasons at Florida, made a Tuesday night appearance on the MetroNews “Statewide Sportsline.”

Check out excerpts from the segment, which featured the North Carolina high school coach discussing his son’s 837-yard passing game in a 2012 state semifinal, as well as last October’s year-long NCAA suspension for taking a banned substance:

The petition for reinstatement: “It’s my understanding that he’s eligible the first week of 2017, but (West Virginia) has compliance officers and NCAA liaisons who can figure all that stuff out.”

On Will’s competitive fire: “He does not care if he has to hand it off every play, run it every play or throw it every play. He’s a guy who wants to win—that’s the only stat he’s ever cared about. He had some ridiculous numbers in high school but never one time did he ask me ‘How many yards did I get?'”

His son’s playing style: “Whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing, he is a little fearless as a runner. He likes to run through people and jump over people, and we’ve had a lot of talks about not trying to do so much of that at this level, but it gets the best of him sometimes and he wants to take off.”

What that 5-0 record in the SEC showed: “I think people might underestimate how athletic he is. … Where I saw progress in those six games at Florida was not getting out of the pocket too quick to rely on his legs, but hanging in there and going through his progressions.”
