The body of Joe Bennett, 51, of Mabscott, was found Saturday afternoon.

Crews found the body of Joe Bennett, 51, of Mabscott, shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday. He had been missing since Thursday afternoon when the boat he was fishing from turned over on the New River in Raleigh County.

Bennett and his friend were fishing near the Grandview Sandbar campground and boat launch in Beaver on Apr. 14 when river currents caught the anchor of their boat and capsized. Bennett disappeared shortly after noon, but the other man was able to swim safely to shore.

The two men were not wearing life jackets at the time, authorities said.

Search crews from the National Park Service, state Division of Natural Resources and others were able to locate the boat a few hours later. Bennett’s body was found 50 yards from the boat on Saturday.
