No. 5 Brooke keeps momentum with win over University

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Class AAA No. 5 Brooke used a big opening inning and held on late to beat University 5-4 Monday night in high school baseball action.

“We made that really interesting,” said Brooke coach Ron Ujcich. “I’m just really proud of the guys to finish strong and get the ‘W’ – a win is a win.”

The Bruins (11-4) scored four runs in the top of the first as Drew Garrett collected a two-RBI hit – part of his three RBIs on the day.

“That was nice,” Ujcich said of the quick start. “I was a little disappointed on our end though, I thought we should have kept rolling with it and we didn’t. We got complacent at the plate and we weren’t real aggressive. We have to get more aggressive and not to sit on a lead. We need to keep pouring it on and put the dagger in – we just haven’t found a way to do that yet.”

Brooke took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but University (7-7) rallied to load the bases, score two more runs and eventually put the potential winning run at second base with two outs.

“We did battle back,” said University coach Buck Riggleman. “We had runners on base and had a couple of opportunities to respond early. But when you spot them a four-run lead in the first inning, it takes away from what you can do offensively – you can’t be as aggressive on the base paths as what you want to be. We just took too many strikes.”

Brooke, meanwhile, has been steadily climbing in the MetroNews baseball poll and entered this week at No. 5. The Bruins already have key wins over No. 6 Ripley and No. 9 Morgantown from earlier in the season.

“We’re right where we expected to be,” Ujcich said. “We’re a senior dominant team. We had a good run last year in the OVAC, fell a little bit short in sectionals, but we had a large core of our nucleus back. We were expecting our guys to perform and excel this year.”
