CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Bernie Sanders’ West Virginia campaign opened an office on Charleston’s East End Friday night, the fourth it has opened statewide.
In advance of the May 10 primary, WV Director for Bernie 2016 Helen Strain said they have a lot of work to do.
“We’re going to be knocking on people’s doors, talking about Bernie, why we support him; we’re going to be on the phones calling people,” she said. “We’re going to urge people to go out and vote, so we’ll be running activities around those. We’ll be doing some visibility and rallies as well.”
Sanders supporter Robin Wilson, who attended the opening ceremony, described why the Vermont Senator had earned his support.
“I’ve been a person who has been interested in social change since high school,” he said. “I’m 73 now, and Bernie Sanders is the best candidate I’ve seen in my lifetime. He’s for economic justice, he’s for environmental safety in terms of climate change. He just hits all the bases.”
Haley Workman said she thought Sanders was the most honest candidate.
“He represents a vast amount of people, ranging from different ages, races; creeds. He’s here to help. He wants to narrow the playing field and take money out of politics, and that’s what’s important to me,” Workman explained.
Strain said the office wanted to get the message out that the WV primary is important.
“Every state means something in this election cycle,” she said. “I think we’ve seen that all over the country. We’re not taking West Virginia for granted.”
The Sanders campaign now has offices in Charleston, Wheeling, Morgantown and Martinsburg.
