Southern WV fans get a chance Saturday to see Mountaineers closer to home

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Mountaineer football fans in southern West Virginia will get the rare opportunity Saturday to see their favorite team play close to home when the annual Gold-Blue scrimmage is held at the Greenbrier Resort practice facility in White Sulphur Springs.

Gates will open at 10 a.m. with the scrimmage set to start at noon on the field where the New Orleans Saints practice.

MetroNews Sports Director Tony Caridi says it’s a good opportunity for fans who usually have to travel to Morgantown.

“You’re going to get (fans) from Charleston, Bluefield, Beckley and all those parts around there. Lots of times it’s a three-hour trip for them,” Caridi said.

It would be difficult to have a spring game at Mountaineer Field this year with the installation of new turf and construction that’s taking place in the stadium’s concourses.

The Greenbrier will provide shuttle service starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 with the proceeds benefiting WVU Children’s Hospital.
