WVSU presidential finalist withdraws from candidacy day after campus visit

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — A West Virginia State University presidential finalist has withdrawn her candidacy to become the university’s next president.

Dr. Roslyn Clark-Artis, a 1991 WVSU graduate and the president of Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens, Florida, was at the Institute campus Wednesday to interview with the school’s Board of Governor’s and to speak with alumni members about why should lead WVSU, but a day later, the university announced she will stay at FMU instead.

In a news release, Clark-Artis said, “It was both a privilege and a pleasure to visit the campus and to meet with members of the campus community and beyond. However, despite my undying affection for ‘the place I love so dear,’ I am not the right person to lead the University into the next phase of its history. As I answered questions throughout the day and continued referencing my experiences at Florida Memorial University, it was clear to me that I love FMU! The students, the staff, the faculty and the community have become my new family. I have a vision for this University, and I intent to stay here and realize it. WVSU is my past. FMU is my present!”

Clark-Artis has led FMU, a private historically black institution with about 1,500 students, since 2013.

WVSU presidential finalists include Anthony Jenkins, senior associate vice president for student development and enrollment services at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, and Barbara Lyman, provost and executive vice president at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.

The university’s Board of Governors are expected to hire a new president Thursday afternoon. A meeting will take place at the Grand Hall of the Erickson Alumni Center at 12 p.m.
