OSHA fines Marion County construction company for “serious” safety violations

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The owners of a Marion County construction business face tens of thousands of dollars worth of fines following an Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

An inspector reported M&M Construction LLC, operating as Michael Jones Contracting, didn’t provide proper protection from falls on a construction site in Fairmont in November 2015.

The complaints allege scaffolding used during roof work had no fall protection and was near a power line. Additionally, roofers working 19 feet above ground were observed with no fall protection.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued two willful and eight serious citations on April 29, 2016.

In a statement from OSHA, Charleston area director Prentice Cline said, “Michael Jones Contracting failed to properly protect its employees at this work site, putting them in danger of a tragic fall or electrocution. Every employer has a responsibility to provide employees with a safe and healthful workplace. Anything less is unacceptable.”

The fines add up to $46,400.
