Body found in Monongahela River identified as missing Harrison County man

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A medical examiner’s report positively identified a body found in the Monongahela River as that of a Harrison County man who was reported missing May 2.

Morgantown investigators began a search of the river May 2 for Steven Joseph Tomasic. The 35-year-old had last been seen walking across the Westover bridge the prior weekend. Witnesses told police they saw Tomasic jump from the bridge to try to swim to Westover.
Police spent at least 3 days using sonar to search the bottom of the river in and around the area of the Westover bridge. Kayakers spent several days scanning the river bank for signs of Tomasic.

The body was discovered just before 10 p.m. Thursday, May 5 near Fort Martin Power Plant.

An investigation continues. But, police report there are not immediate signs of foul play.
