BECKLEY, W.Va. — The Herd’s nine-game win streak came to an end on a foggy Tuesday evening in Beckley, falling to Wake Forest 3-1. The game was called in the seventh inning because of thick fog in the area.
The thick fog started creeping across the mountains in the third inning and started to envelop Epling Stadium in the fifth. By the seventh inning the outfielders had disappeared from view from the pressbox. After 30 minute delay the game was called in the bottom of the seventh with the Herd trailing.
Tyler Ratliff blasted his 10th homerun of the season in the first inning. The sophomore deposited the first pitch he saw over the left filed fence to give Marshall an early 1-0 lead.
Wake Forest responded in the third inning with three runs on three hits and a pair of walks.
Freshman pitcher Joshua Shapiro had a solid outing on the mound pitching into the sixth inning, striking out seven.
Marshall, currently one game out of first-place in Conference USA, finishes the regular season this weekend with three games against Old Dominion at Appalachian Power Park.
