W.Va. Trump Campaign co-chair: ‘Let’s move forward’ from federal judge statements

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The co-chair of the Donald Trump Campaign in West Virginia says the presumptive GOP presidential nominee needs to look ahead instead of dwelling on statements he made in connection to the Trump University controversy.

“I think he needs to move past this issue, I mean, every moment we spend on this issue is a moment we don’t have to litigate the case against Hillary Clinton,” Mike Stuart said on Wednesday’s “580 Live” hosted by Charleston Mayor Danny Jones on MetroNews affiliate 580-WCHS in Charleston.

Trump made remarks last week about a Mexican-American judge, involved in a Trump University case, as being biased against him because of his heritage. On Tuesday, Trump released a statement saying it was “unfortunate” his comments were “misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage.”

“I do not feel that one’s heritage makes them incapable of being impartial, but, based on the rulings that I have received in the Trump University civil case, I feel justified in questioning whether I am receiving a fair trial,” Trump said in the statement.

Clinton made history Tuesday night following the last of the Primary Elections in the nation. She clinched the Democratic nomination as the first woman to be a major party’s nominee for President of the United States.

Stuart called it “fantastic that we’ve crashed the glass ceiling here in terms of a woman being nominated to be President,” but said Clinton is not what America needs as a commander-in-chief.

“I think there are lots of women across this country who would be good, quality Presidents. I don’t view a difference between men and women in that view, but I think Hillary Clinton does play the woman card quite often,” he said.

When Trump hosted a rally in Charleston last month, he discussed several issues such as putting coal miners back to work, trade deals, while also taking a few stabs at Clinton for being “a failed (U.S.) Secretary of State,” Stuart said.

“We need to spend time talking about these issues and not about some federal judge in a case in which he’s affected,” he said. “My advice to him (Trump) would be let’s move forward. Let’s litigate the case for America and why we can restore this country.”
