Morgantown set to unveil statue of founder

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia Day in Morgantown will be marked with the unveiling of a statue of the city’s founder Col. Zackquill Morgan.

The statue is located on the plaza at the Morgantown Public Safety Building. The unveiling is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday.

Morgan moved to what is now Monongalia County in 1771. He claimed the land along the Monongahela River and Deckers Creek. The property was established as Morgan’s Town by the Virginia General Assembly in October 1785.

Zackquill Morgan fought in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War.

The statue, which features Morgan holding a city charter and a muzzleloader, was commissioned by Brenda Shinkovich, Sandy Bennett and Amy Westwood and created by well-known sculptor Jamie Lester.
