State Police: Driver shot by Fairmont cop attempted to hit officer

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — A man wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Marion County was reportedly trying to run police over in a stolen car.

According to West Virginia State Police a Fairmont officer, whose identity has not been released, was investigating a stolen vehicle report at Muriale’s Restaurant on Fairmont Avenue Wednesday evening around 7:30.

After determining the vehicle was reported as stolen in Harrison County, officer approached the car occupied by Stephen Anthony Haller, 48, and Laciana Roush, 40.

The state police investigation found an officer fired his service pistol at the driver who “decided to use the vehicle as a weapon and drove in an aggressive and threatening manner toward an officer.”

Haller was struck and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Thursday afternoon, West Virginia University hospital officials indicated Haller’s name was not in the directory of patients.

Roush was taken into custody.

State police report both had outstanding arrest warrants and are being charged in connection with the possession of the stolen vehicle and other offenses by the Fairmont Police Department.

The West Virginia State Police is conducting the investigation into the shooting incident.
