Potential flooding in forecast for Greenbrier and Summers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — It is exactly the forecast flood victims fear in West Virginia.

The National Weather Service out of Blacksburg, Va. issued a flash flood warning in effect until 6 p.m. in Summers and Greenbrier Counties.

“The potential is there. We’re expecting those waters to come up again. They issued it through the afternoon,” said meteorologist Mike Zwier with the National Weather Service in Charleston.

Every part of the two counties was expected to be impacted by late afternoon Monday.

“Definitely need people to pay attention. If you live near a creek or a stream, keep a very vigilant eye on it. As soon as you see it coming up, make sure you get yourself to safety,” Zwier advised.

Additional flooding is anticipated in Alleghany, Lewisburg, Hinton, White Sulphur Springs and Ronceverte.

The rainfall rate Thursday will not be matched or even approached Monday Zwier said.

“There were some places that were pushing 7 or 8 inches of rain within a 24 hour time frame which is obviously going to cause across West Virginia with all our hills and hollows around. Fortunately for today, while we are still looking at that chance of heavy rain and why we have those flash flood watches and warnings out, we’re not looking at that much rain.”

Residents should be cautious in areas already saturated from last week’s rainfall that have the potential to give way as mud slides.
