MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Three-star cornerback DeAmonte King, who also stars at receiver and runs track for St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio, became West Virginia’s eight commitment for 2017 on Tuesday.
His other Power Five offer is Boston College though six MAC schools are pursuing him, including Toledo and Akron.
King (5-11, 175) fits a need position for West Virginia, which loses four senior cornerbacks next season — Antonio Crawford, Rasul Douglas, Nana Kyeremeh and Iowa graduate transfer Maurice Fleming.
Ever since visiting Morgantown in March, King called WVU’s offer a game-changer and has been leaning toward the Mountaineers. First-year cornerbacks coach Blue Adams served as lead recruiter, though Ron Crook and Tony Gibson’s ties to Ohio helped facilitate the relationship.
As a junior last month, King anchored his team’s 800-meter relay team to the Ohio Division II state title in 1:28.21.
St. Vincent-St. Mary finished as runner-up in the 1,600 and King took third individually in the 400 meters at 47.38.
As a two-way football standout last season, King made two interceptions while making 32 receptions worth 728 yards and 11 touchdowns.
