Volunteer WV opens registration center in Kanawha County for citizens willing to help flooded communities

ELKVIEW, W.Va. — Citizens in the Elkview area can register with Volunteer West Virginia to help flood victims and communities get back on their feet.

A volunteer registration center was set up Monday at the Mt. Tabor Methodist Church in Elkview. People looking to get involved can either sign up at the site, online or by phone.

“What we’re doing is registering volunteers here and sending them out in the field to do clean up or whatever it is they can do for us to help people,” said Janet Kelley, state disaster recovery coordinator of Catholic Charities West Virginia.

Several different church groups and other organizations were on hand Tuesday morning to help sign volunteers up.

Volunteer West Virginia, which is the state’s Commission for National and Community Service, teamed up with Mt. Tabor Church for the registration site which will be there for at least a week, if not more, Kelley said.

Those willing to help can visit www.volunteerwv.org or can call 304-859-3748. The number to register for cleanup is 1-800-451-1954.

Kelley said sometimes people who want to help can’t get out, but there are other ways to assist people.

“For those that maybe aren’t able to go out and do clean up — some of the churches, they have food banks that are going on and then they need help with food and some of them need help with sorting clothes and that type of thing,” she said. “We can use everybody in some capacity.”

Volunteers in the field should wear proper attire including long pants, hard soled shoes, work gloves and dust masks and eye protection.

The center will be open Monday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday-Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
