FEMA has centers open across W.Va. to assist flood survivors

ELKVIEW, W.Va. — There are four Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Recovery Centers that are open in West Virginia to assist flood survivors.

In Kanawha County, about 50 people showed up to their center in Elkview the first day, and since then, more have stopped by to get the help they need.

“If people have questions about letters that the received from FEMA, they can come here and we can look their case up and explain why they received the letter and what it means and what they need to do to possibly remedy a situation,” said Candace Cleveland, the FEMA disaster recovery center manager at the Kanawha County Crede Warehouse.

Cleveland said individuals and families can get one-on-one assistance for home repairs, property loss and other serious disaster-related needs that were not covered by insurance.

The centers are designed to be a “one-stop-shop” for disaster assistance, Cleveland said.

Cleveland encouraged flood survivors to get out and register with FEMA and to take advantage of what other local organizations have to offer while they’re still around.

“It’s really important for applicants to get out there in the beginning to get the services,” she said. “Some things are offered in the beginning of disasters and kind of go away as a disaster goes on.”

Pictures of the flooding in homes and communities is nothing compared to what it looks like in person, Cleveland said, “I like to make sure the staff goes out and looks though. I think that’s really important.”

“It’s different than a picture, I know.”

All centers are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
