Murray Energy issues WARN notices to over 4,000 employees

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio — Murray Energy announced Friday that it has warned more 4,000 employees in six states of potential layoffs.

Murray has mines in Monongalia, Ohio, Harrison, Marion and Marshall counties in West Virginia. The company issued WARN notices to 4,400 workers Friday of possible layoffs within 60 days.

The company is anticipating a large workforce reduction come September. Which mines would be affected by the layoffs was not specified.

Murray said in a prepared statement that the layoffs are caused “the ongoing destruction of the United States coal industry” by the Obama administration and “the increased utilization of natural gas to generate electricity.”
