Postal Service makes adjustments following flood

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Nineteen post offices in the flooded region continue to provide alternate services for residents.

Work continued Friday to repair the postal office locations which can be repaired,d U.S. Postal Service spokesman Tad Kelley told MetroNews.

“We found that many of them can be, within a short period of time, brought back and some of them will take a little bit longer,” he said. “The main thing is that our efforts have been geared toward restoring customer service as quickly as possible and where we could not we have alternate service set up to retrieve their P.O. Box mail or by stamp,” Kelley said.

The June 23 flood destroyed hundreds of homes and in many cases postal customers will have to fill-out change of address information with the postal service, Kelley said.

The USPS’s Postal Inspector’s Office moved in soon after the flooding to protect the mail that was in the post offices that were damaged. The mail that has not been delivered is being protected, Kelley said.

“We appreciate so much our customers’ patience during this time because we know they are going through a lot themselves,” he said. “Time will fix everything but it’s going to take a little bit of time.”
