Tornado warning causes brief Fourth of July scare in Kanawha Valley

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A tornado moving eastward from the Hamlin area toward Charleston caused a brief scare in southern West Virginia Monday night.

Shortly after 4 p.m., a tornado warning was announced for about an hour for Lincoln, Boone, Putnam and Kanawha counties.

The National Weather Service has not confirmed that a tornado was in the area, but sightings were reported in the Alum Creek and Hamlin areas.The Kanawha County Emergency Operations Center has been activated.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for all West Virginia counties with the exception of the eastern and northern panhandles until 4 a.m. Tuesday.
