Monongalia Republican committee selects Shuttlesworth for November ballot

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Monongalia County Republican Roger Shuttlesworth has exactly four months to campaign for a House of Delegates seat.

Shuttlesworth was one of 7 candidates on the 2014 primary ticket in the same race.

He was sixth in vote totals.

When Delegate Brian Kurcaba chose to remove his name from the general election this year, the Monongalia County Republican Executive Committee was charged with finding a candidate to replace him.

Serving in its role as House of Delegates District Executive Committee for District 51, members announced their selection Thursday morning.

By afternoon, the lifelong resident of Monongalia County was ready to start campaigning.

“First thing would be getting organized. (I’ll be) getting a group of folks that are like minded and have like interests as I do. Get them organized and get out in the public and start shaking hands and talking to people to find out what the community and the folks I would represent would actually want,” Shuttlesworth said.

The county Republican committee must notify the Secretary of State’s office of Shuttlesworth’s candidacy. Shuttlesworth must also file his candidacy before officially campaigning.

Shuttlesworth retired after 35 years with a local company and has worked with Marion County EMS and Triune Halleck Volunteer Fire Department. He lives in the Halleck community

He said he’s seen the ups and downs at the state legislature.

“I’ve seen how some of the political past has happened in Monongalia County and some ways we can improve and bring more benefits back to the community than we have been in the past. It’s almost like Charleston forgets we’re up here a little bit further north than they are.”

After having run for office 2 years ago, Shuttlesworth said he expects to hear some of the same concerns from Monongalia County residents.

“One big issue might be the loss of population for the state. We need to go the opposite direction and bring good quality jobs into West Virginia and make sure we have a sound tax base to go forward and grow the state and Monongalia County,” predicted Shuttlesworth.

The general election is November 8.
