Police investigate murder in Mineral County

CARPENDALE, W.Va. — A Mineral County man has been charged with allegedly shooting and killing a pregnant woman, state police said.

Phillip Richard Shipley, 68, of Carpendale, was arrested Wednesday afternoon outside his home. The body of Bernice Amber Crawford, 19, was found inside. She died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, troopers said.

The two had an altercation earlier Wednesday in Cumberland, Md., where Shipley allegedly beat on Crawford and then Crawford’s boyfriend attacked and beat Shipley, according to investigators.

Crawford, who was six months pregnant, traveled with friends to Shipley’s home. She went inside alone where the shooting occurred, police said.

Shipley is charged with two counts of first degree murder and three counts of attempted murder. He’s being held in the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail without bail.
