Pennsylvania man dead in Upshur County following shootout with deputy; State Police investigating

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting late Thursday night in rural Upshur County.

A deputy from the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a report of trespasser on another person’s land allegedly driving drunk on a motorcycle.

The Upshur County Sheriff’s Office reports that man is Paul Yacabitis, a man in his early 50’s from Pennsylvania.

A Sheriff’s deputy approached Yacabitis, which is when the Sheriff’s Office claims Yacabitis pulled out a firearm. Upshur County Sheriff David Coffman said the deputy opened fire, which resulted in Yacabitis’s death.

Sheriff Coffman believes Yacabitis did fire at least one shot at the Deputy.

First responders transported Yacabitis to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon–where he was pronounced dead.

The location of the incident in question is around Childers Run Road.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave with pay.

West Virginia State Police is investigating.
