DANVILLE, W.Va. — WVEA staff and legal representatives will hold a meeting with employees of the Boone County Board of Education on Thursday in Danville.
The meeting comes in the wake of cuts to supplemental pay, as well as vision and dental benefits made last week by the school system.
Facing the possibility of a takeover by the WV Dept. of Education if it did not trim its budget for the coming school year, the Boone board decided to make the recommended cuts.
“Employees should receive their official notice from the Boone County Board of Education regarding the mandated cuts to their salary and benefits in the next day or two,” said local BCEA President Jerry Pcholinsky. “We hope the meeting will be an opportunity for employees to ask questions and discuss what will happen next. We urge everyone to attend.”
WVEA General Counsel Andy Katz and WVEA organizational development specialist Mike Hennessey will both attend the meeting.
“The employees are angry, frustrated and worried about their future. And who could blame them?” asked Hennessey. “As an organization WVEA is committed to help the employees who are caught in this devastating situation. We believe the Board has violated the constitutional and due process rights of the employees and we will be taking legal action.”
The meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Danville Community Center is the first of several the WVEA plans to hold with the employees of Boone County Schools.
