Kanawha BOE to discuss future of Clendenin Elementary Wednesday night

CLENDENIN, W.Va. — With school beginning next Monday in Kanawha County, the county school board will hold a meeting Wednesday night on the future of Clendenin Middle School.

After being declared a 97 percent loss by FEMA last week in the aftermath of historic flooding, the school is unlikely to reopen.

The Kanawha School Board didn’t discuss flooded schools at its Monday meeting, but planned a 6 p.m. meeting Wednesday at the Clendenin Volunteer Fire Dept.

“We want to have a meeting with the people of Clendenin,” said board member Pete Thaw. “We want them to know first what our thinking is and have a discussion with them regarding the future of their great school.”

Thaw said a decision had to be made, and the board wanted to include the public’s input.

“We’re pretty sure where we’re going,” he added. “Because we don’t have many alternatives up there. We’re going to try to keep school as normal and regular as possible under these circumstances.”

Clendenin Elementary students will be starting the 2016-17 school year splitting time at Bridge Elementary, before portable trailers are put in place.

Two weeks ago, the Kanawha County School Board announced at a public meeting held at Elkview Middle School that Herbert Hoover High School would not reopen in the wake of the June 23 flood.
