Miner dies after Wyoming County mine accident

PINEVILLE, W.Va. — A Mingo County coal miner has died nearly a week after an accident at a Wyoming County mine.

Donald Workman, 58, of Gilbert, died Thursday night, state officials confirmed.

Last Friday afternoon, July 29, Workman was seriously hurt when there was some kind of ignition in the shaft of the Spartan Mining Company’s Road Fork #51 Mine located in Pineville.

Initial reports indicated Workman was on the surface, not in the underground mine at the time of the ignition.

Investigators with the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training were working to determine the cause.

Workman was reportedly a maintenance supervisor.

Seven people have died in coal mines in the U.S. this year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Including Workman’s death, three of those fatalities have been in West Virginia.
