Former WVU Shooter Zublasing comes up short in bid for medal in Rio

RIO, Brazil –– A third Olympic medal tied to the WVU Rifle program fell just out of reach on Thursday at the game in Rio. Former West Virginia University shooter Petra Zublasing, shooting for Italy, entered the finals of the Women’s 50 Meter Three-Position event as the top qualifier. She shot an Olympic record in the qualifying round. However, down the stretch, Zublasing finished in 4th place with a final score of 437.7.

Olympic gold medalist and Mountaineer shooter Ginny Thrasher came up one shot short of making the finals in her second Olympic event Thursday morning.

Thrasher, who struck gold in the Women’s 10 Meter Air Rifle event and earned the first gold medal of the 2016 games in Rio, finished 11th in the three-position qualifier with a final score of 581. The second to last shot of the match was her undoing when Thrasher hit an “8”.

Former WVU Shooter and All-American Ziva Dvorsak, shooting for Slovenia, finished in 30th place.

The event was won by German shooter Barbara Engleder who shot an Olympic Finals Record score of 458.6. Chinese shooters Binbin Zhang and Li Du picked up the Silver and Bronze for the event.

In addition to Thrasher’s Gold in women’s air rifle, former WVU shooter Nicco Campriani, a member of Team Italy, also won the Gold medal in the men’s air rifle event. Campriani has two events left, the men’s 50 Meter 3-Position and the men’s 50-Meter Prone events.
