Following numerous complaints, Martinsburg returns to fireworks ban

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — There’s another West Virginia city taking steps to dial back the new state law on fireworks. Martinsburg City Council gave unanimous approval to an ordinance Thursday night prohibiting the discharge of fireworks within the city limits.

The move takes Martinsburg back to where it was before the legislature legalized additional fireworks during the last legislative session with the tax revenues going to volunteer fire departments and a new veterans nursing home.

The Martinsburg Police Department has fielded dozens of complaint calls since late-June on the use of the fireworks in the late night and early morning hours.

Martinsburg City Attorney Kin Sayre said the city will be working with police in order to make sure the new ordinance is enforced.

Other municipalities are taking various steps to deal with fireworks. South Charleston, for example, is considering a proposal to limit when they can be let off.
